CHICAGO, Ill., USA: The Chicago Dental Society’s 155th Midwinter Meeting featured more than 650 exhibitors across 170,000 square feet of floor space in McCormick Place West with show specials, money-saving services and new products — many of which attendees could handle and even test out onsite.

The CDS offered 1 C.E .credit each day of the meeting to attendees who took time to explore the exhibits.

New this year was the Corporate Learning Theater, an open-air, open-seating venue where about a dozen exhibitors provided in-depth details on some of the industry’s most innovative and sought-after instruments, technological advancements and core products for you practice.

Beyond the exhibit hall, the meeting’s agenda featured a broad selection of high-value courses, lectures and workshops. Highlights included all-day lectures and workshops, business management insights and a simulated court trial — as well as symposia on oral cancer and implants. In all, more than 175 top speakers presented more than 250 courses during the three-day meeting.

Among the highlights: Dr. Gordon Christensen shared insights on the market’s latest materials and resin restorations. In “Business Office: Nerve Center of Your Practice,” an all-day practice track today, six speakers explored topics covering insurance, financial organization, communications, marketing and scheduling tips to help attendees build a firmer foundation for efficient practice management.

Five speakers shared information on keeping practitioners and their staffs healthy and productive. In the career track “Health and Wellness: Keys to a Long Career,” Midwinter-Meeting-favorite Dr. Uche Odiatu along with four other presenters explored self-care tips, providing an overview of the microbiome and outlining methods for managing stress and emotions.

A certification class approved by the American Board of Laser Surgery was led by Dr. Robert Convissar, who presented “Laser Dentistry from A-Z,” detailing the use of lasers for specific procedures in the general practice.

Opioids took center stage at a simulated legal trial: “An Opioid Overdose Death Following Dental Surgery.” Attendees were able to hear and see what takes place in the courtroom with Mitchell Gardiner, DMD, Robert Anderton, DDS, JD, Ryan Donihue, JD, and Jo Jagor, JD, who demonstrated how testimony and evidence is presented in court by prosecutors and the defense.

Eight Chicago dentists and physicians from Rush University Medical Center’s head and neck cancer team joined forces Friday to outline and update attendees on evaluating and managing oral cancers. The free, afternoon panel discussion examined the HPV epidemic, early-detection nstrategies and advances in fighting oral cancers.

A practice track on Saturday, “Implants in Today’s Dental Practice,” was an all-day track in which six dentists provided an overview of the growth of implants as well as maintenance tips. How to use lasers to save failing implants also is included.

Saturday afternoon, five speakers gathered for a Dental Assistant Roundtable. Tips for improving sterilization procedures, contamination pitfalls and ways to improve performance were covered by the group.
